More on the Oracle CMS Patent
Monday, August 2, 2004
I've expanded the prior post to a Viewpoint over at eLearning Dialogue. As I discussed this issue with CIOs and other instructional technologists at the recent Syllabus and Alt-I-Lab conferences, my first reaction was shared by others without exception.
I talked with a representative from Oracle, admittedly not very high up, and she knew nothing of the patent. It will be interesting to hear Oracle's side of the story.
For now, however, I remain concerned.
Bow Down to the Oracle?
Tuesday, July 13, 2004
Browsing my news reader I can't believe what I just read at LWN.net. It seems that Oracle has been granted a patent for the core capabilities of a CMS. The patent application was filed in March of 2000 and was granted in June 2004.
Logic dictates that there is certainly prior art prior to the filing. However, the Patent Office has granted some strange patents despite the fact that there are commonly implemented concepts for doing business on the Internet preceding the filing.
I am not claiming to be a patent attorney but a quick read on the Patent Office site sure is disturbing. I think it is time to raise the flag over at eLearning Dialogue to see if anyone else has seen this and is concerned with the implications.

Just finished the last of the edits on the a book chapter on next generation course management systems. This is a collaboration with Phil Long from M.I.T. Long hours over the last two days, but we are finished, and the chapter will be submitted soon. More later.
By the way, most of the draft was written in Tinderbox, the tool I use to create this site.

Over at the CMS Review on the Syllabus website, I have a viewpoint on blogs and CMS systems.
New Site
Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Its time to move the edIT over to Tinderbox. I've really enjoyed using TB for my other weblog, and more important, as a primary tool for keeping my life in order. I am not sure whether I will be moving any of the old weblog over here. If I get time, I will see what it will take to make it happen.
It will take some time to futz with the new site to get it to a state where everything works as expected, but the little time I spent today got it close enough to get online.
